The Making of the Snacker TV commmercial
Gyro was commisioned to make a TV commercial that combined a 3D modeled enviroment also using a character that was modeled for real. Once an array of characters were produced they were then shot on 35mm film as a stop frame animation sequence film then placed into a 3D generated world.
Original brief being given to Thrain one of the 3D animators at 3D Ltd
Cameron starts sculpting the critters in plasticine, later to have moulds taken in plaster.
Once moulded and cast the stop frame animation characters were painted.
Multiples of each were made for the replacement animation sequence
3 days of stop frame animation were filmed in Gyro's studio
Replacement animation requires many units with slight exrpession changes.
Meanwhile Alf at ElectricImage set about building a 3D model of the characters head.
The wire frame head takes shape ready to have Lukes' face texture map placed onto it.
3D Ltd then places Lukes head into the 3D environment being built on their SGI computer.
Multiple views of the complex tunnel network that Luke' head is to fly though.
Agency producer Jen Story checks Lukes make up for the blue screen shot.
Andrew directs Luke for the filming of various expressions to be used as texture maps.
Rubber faced Luke can make every expression, except a look of contentment it seems. We'll fix that in post!
Finally, nearly a month later all the components are assembled in the editing suite.
Each frame had to be painstakingly compiled, getting the critters to blend in with the 3D modeled environment.
